A method of space object detection by wide FOV telescope based on its following error

For the images acquired by the wide FOV survey telescope, the imaging characteristics of space object and star are similar. Both have no textual features and appear as a very small number of pixels, which results in the object being submerged in a vast number of stars. Firstly, since space object moves fast with respect to star, the difference method can be used to calculate the movement distance of the object in the two adjacent frames, which is theoretically minimal compared to the star. Secondly, in order to improve the robustness of the method, the list of the suspicious objects based on the movement distance is introduced to detect the true object. Finally, the clustering algorithm is applied to successfully extract the object trajectory. Unlike traditional detection methods or techniques, our proposed detection takes full advantage of the following error of telescope, which provides a more reliable basis for improving the detection rate. The feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm was verified by the 1.2m wide FOV telescope at the Jilin base of the Changchun observatory, with a detection rate of over 98%. The test results indicate that the method can satisfy the demand for detecting the object in an open-loop tracking. If the detection method is implemented in hardware, it can detect the object in a closed-loop tracking. As a result, it will have a wider scope for applications.
